What limitations should be expected if estrogen-based skincare is started later in life?

Starting estrogen based skincare later in life can still be very helpful, but it’s good to have a realistic sense of how it works on skin that’s already gone through many years of collagen loss.

Here at Alloy, we often lean on what Dr. Ellen Gendler shared in our webinar. She explained that topical estrogen is therapeutic even in late menopause, meaning it can still improve collagen, hydration, and elasticity. But there are limits. In her words, if someone is in their late seventies or eighties, topical estrogen can help maintain moisture and improve the quality of the skin, but it can’t completely reverse changes that have been building for decades. A big part of that is sun exposure. Facial skin has lived through years of UV, while areas like the vaginal walls have not, so estrogen can revive vaginal tissue more dramatically than facial skin.

That said, the improvements on the face are still meaningful. Studies show topical estriol boosts collagen, strengthens the skin barrier, increases thickness, and reduces wrinkle depth even after menopause. It’s just that the deeper structural changes, like long standing laxity or sun damage, won’t snap back entirely.

If you want to hear Dr. Gendler talk through these expectations, the Timing & Expectations chapter of our YouTube conversation is a great listen. Here’s the direct link: Timing & Expectations.
