What level of weight loss is commonly seen with semaglutide, and how might combining it with menopausal hormone therapy affect expectations?

What weight loss is commonly seen with semaglutide?

Here at Alloy, we typically talk about semaglutide (Wegovy®) expectations in terms of percent of starting body weight. A common average is about 15% of body weight lost over 12 months. (You’ll usually notice appetite changes first, then steadier loss over the following months.) You can see that on our Wegovy® page

How adding menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) might change expectations

MHT isn’t considered a weight-loss medication on its own, but it can help with fat distribution and with menopause symptoms like hot flashes and sleep disruption, which can make weight management harder.

When MHT is combined with semaglutide, an early study in Menopause found that women on both MHT and semaglutide lost about 30% more weight at 12 months than women on semaglutide who weren’t using hormone therapy. So if you’re someone who’s a good candidate for MHT, adding it could mean your results on semaglutide may be better than you’d expect from semaglutide alone. A quick note on safety and doing them together

At Alloy, we also note there are no contraindications to using GLP-1s and MHT at the same time, and some early data suggests benefits to the combo: Can I take GLP-1 medication with Menopausal Hormone Therapy (MHT)?
