How do probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics differ—and when is each useful?
What probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics are
Probiotics are the “good” microbes you add to your gut, either from fermented foods (like yogurt, kefir, kimchi, sauerkraut, miso) or from a supplement. In our gut health webinar, Dr. Kumkum Sarkar Patel talks about how, in peri and menopause, women tend to lose helpful strains like lactobacillus and bifidobacterium, and replenishing them through food, or a supplement if food isn’t enough, can be helpful.
Prebiotics are the fiber that feeds your existing good microbes. At Alloy, we mostly talk about this in the practical, food-first way, eating more plant foods and aiming for about 25 to 38 grams of fiber a day (Dr. Patel suggests using 30 grams a day as an easy target). Many plants contain prebiotic fiber, which is what your good gut microbes like to eat.
Synbiotics combine both, a probiotic plus a prebiotic in one, so you’re adding helpful microbes and giving them something to “eat” at the same time.
When each is useful
Probiotics can be useful when you’re trying to rebuild microbial diversity, for example after a course of antibiotics, since antibiotics can wipe out good bacteria along with the bad. Dr. Patel’s advice is to go back to a fiber-rich diet and probiotic foods, and if that’s not enough, a probiotic supplement may help.
Prebiotics are useful when your goal is to support and grow the good bacteria you already have, especially by consistently eating more fiber-rich plant foods. This also ties into the gut-brain axis and overall wellbeing, since fiber breakdown produces short-chain fatty acids.
Synbiotics are useful when you want the combination approach in one step, especially if you’re already working on diet but want extra support for gut diversity during perimenopause and menopause.
