What evidence supports estriol-based face creams for menopausal skin?
There’s actually a pretty solid body of evidence behind using estriol on the face for menopausal skin, and a lot of it focuses on exactly what happens when estrogen levels drop in perimenopause and menopause.
Here at Alloy, we lean on two types of data: independent clinical studies of our M4 formulas and decades of published research showing how topical estrogen affects aging skin.
What the clinical studies show
The most direct evidence comes from the independent, double blind, placebo controlled study of the M4 Face Cream Rx. After 12 weeks, women using the estriol cream saw measurable, statistically significant changes compared to placebo, including 88 percent improvement in elasticity, 70 percent improvement in hydration, and 57 percent improvement in texture. You can see all the details in the full report if you want a deeper dive: M4 Face Cream Clinical Study.
There’s also a 2025 study specifically on the M4 Eye Cream Rx, which uses a higher concentration of estriol. That study showed up to 40 percent improvement in elasticity and crepiness and 25 percent wrinkle reduction. Those results are available here: M4 Eye Cream Clinical Study.
If you prefer hearing it explained, Dr. Sharon Malone talks through the science behind estriol face creams in this clip, including why estriol has such a long history of use on the skin and how the research guided formulation choices. Here’s the chapter link: Science Behind Estriol Creams.
What the broader research shows
Published studies outside Alloy’s work also support topical estrogen for aging skin. They consistently show improvements in dermal thickness, collagen content, hydration, fine wrinkles, and elasticity in postmenopausal women. Estriol in particular is well studied and stays local to the skin, which is why it’s used in our M4 line. If you want to read the science, you can look at some of the studies linked in our blog posts, such as Schmidt et al. (1996) and Stevenson & Thornton (2007), both referenced here: The Science Behind Putting Estrogen on Your Face.
Between the clinical trial results, the dermatology research, and the safety data showing no rise in systemic estrogen levels, estriol creams have a strong evidence base for helping menopausal skin look and feel healthier.
