Does topical estrogen worsen rosacea?

Topical estrogen doesn’t worsen rosacea. Both Dr. Ellen Gendler and Dr. Corinne Menn have been very clear about this. In the interview we share on our site, Dr. Gendler says there’s no reason topical estrogen should aggravate rosacea, and it shouldn’t be a reason to avoid it. It isn’t a treatment for rosacea, but it doesn’t flare it.

Dr. Menn also talks about this in her skincare video and notes that the data we have doesn’t show topical estrogen making rosacea worse. If anything, because it supports hydration and the skin barrier, it may make your skin feel a bit more comfortable overall, though it won’t treat rosacea itself. You can watch her explain that here: Rosacea and topical estrogen.

If your rosacea needs more focused support, here at Alloy we do have a prescription Rosacea Face Cream Rx that targets inflammation and Demodex related bumps. You can take a look at it here: Rosacea Face Cream Rx.

And if you’re thinking about topical estrogen for skin health, our M4 estriol products are designed to be gentle and barrier friendly, which is often helpful for hormonally sensitive skin: M4 skincare.
