# Vaginal vs Face Estrogen Cream: What Changes

> Learn how vaginal estrogen and estriol face cream affect estrogen-deficient skin, and why the formulation changes for facial use.

## Does switching from a vaginal to a face-specific estrogen cream change the underlying science?

Not much. The underlying science is basically the same: local estrogen can help estrogen-deficient skin become thicker, better hydrated, and more elastic, with collagen support. That applies to vaginal tissue and to facial skin.

What changes is the formulation. Vaginal cream usually uses estradiol, which is the more potent form of estrogen, and it’s made for vaginal tissue. Here at Alloy, our face cream uses estriol, which is less potent and chosen because it works well in skincare. The face cream also has a facial cream base and added skincare ingredients like glycerin and vitamin E, so it’s more pleasant and practical to use on the face.

Dr. Ellen Gendler put it pretty simply in our webinar: vaginal estrogen used on the face can work, but the cream base isn’t as nice for facial use, which is why at Alloy, we reformulated it.
