## Why might rosacea seem to improve after switching to a single topical estrogen cream?

If your rosacea seems better after switching to a single topical estrogen cream, there are a couple of explanations based on what our experts describe.

One possibility is that simplifying your routine helps. Dr. Gendler mentions that rosacea tends to behave better when fewer products are on the skin. Many creams are richer or more occlusive than you realize, and rosacea doesn’t love being layered with lots of moisturizers. If your estrogen cream replaced two or three other products, that alone can calm things down.

Another piece is that topical estrogen can strengthen the skin barrier and improve hydration. Dr. Menn points out that while estrogen won’t cure rosacea, healthier, more hydrated skin can be less reactive and less prone to flare ups. That means the rosacea feels calmer even though the estrogen isn’t treating the underlying condition.
