# Estradiol vs. Estriol: Skin Therapy Roles

> Estradiol vs estriol: learn how these estrogens differ, why estriol is gentler for skin, and how topical therapy may support menopause skin health.

## What are the distinct biological roles of estradiol and estriol, and why does that matter for skin therapies?

Estradiol and estriol are both estrogens your body makes naturally, but they behave pretty differently, and that matters a lot when we talk about skin therapies.

Estradiol is the most potent estrogen. It’s the one that drives reproductive functions like breast development and thickening of the uterine lining. Because it’s strong, it’s the form used in menopausal hormone therapy at systemic doses, and here at Alloy it’s what we use in our estradiol pills, patches, gels, sprays, and vaginal creams. Estradiol is fantastic for treating classic menopause symptoms, but that potency also means you want to be thoughtful about where and how you use it.

Estriol is much weaker. Your body makes tons of it during pregnancy, but very little the rest of the time. Even though it’s gentler, it still acts on estrogen receptors in the skin. The big difference is that it has very weak effects on breast and uterine tissue. That’s why, when you apply it topically in very low doses, it works right where you put it and doesn’t raise systemic estrogen levels. This makes it ideal for skincare.

For facial skin, this distinction really matters. As estrogen drops in perimenopause and menopause, collagen, moisture, and elasticity drop too, and that’s what leads to thinning, dryness, and wrinkles. Topical estriol can directly boost collagen production, improve hydration, and increase elasticity without absorbing into the bloodstream in any meaningful way. That’s why we built our M4 skincare line around estriol.
