# Introducing Anne & Monica, the Founders of Alloy

We’re **Anne and Monica**, the founders of [Alloy](https://www.myalloy.com/). We wanted to share a little bit about how we got started here, and why.

**Monica discovered she had the breast cancer gene when she was 40.** After conversations with her doctors and her husband, and finding inspiration in a 2013 New York Times op-ed by Angelina Jolie, she made the difficult decision to have her ovaries removed. It dramatically reduced her chances of getting cancer, but it also sent her into menopause overnight.

She spent the next five years looking for the best way to treat her symptoms. She ended up with so many answers it made her head spin, and the process left her feeling confused, overwhelmed, and alone.

**Anne had been working in magazines for 25 years when her mother died of a heart attack.** While experiencing the emotional rollercoaster of perimenopause, she decided she wanted to do something to make a lasting impact on women’s health.

**Here’s the bottom line:** We couldn’t believe how hard it was to find solutions and information about how to take care of ourselves at this age. After all, every woman goes through menopause, and there are A LOT of us!

Turns out, despite everything we’d heard, for the majority of healthy women, menopausal hormone treatment is by far the safest and most effective solution.
